Step-by-Step Guide

1

Find all physical YubiKeys

Search keychains, desk drawers, safes, laptop bags, and offices for YubiKey devices. They are small USB or NFC devices. There may be multiple keys.

2

Identify which accounts use the YubiKey

Check the deceased's records for which accounts were protected by YubiKey. Common ones include Google, Microsoft, GitHub, crypto exchanges, and banking.

3

Look for backup keys

Best practice is to register a backup YubiKey. Check for a second key stored in a safe or different location. The backup key works for the same accounts.

4

Contact platforms if keys are lost

If no YubiKey can be found, contact each platform's support with a death certificate. Some platforms allow removing hardware key requirements with identity verification.

5

Check for backup codes

Many platforms provide one-time backup codes when a hardware key is registered. Check for printed codes in safes or filing cabinets.
