What Happens to Your Utilities Transfer Account When You Die
Quick Facts
Electric/Gas/Water
Call with death cert
Internet
Keep active — needed for access
Both names on account
No action needed
Step-by-Step Guide
Start with internet
Internet access is needed to log into other accounts, access email, and manage the estate online. Transfer the internet account first and keep it running.
Call each provider with death certificate
Electric, gas, water, internet, cable, trash — call each and request a name transfer. Most allow phone transfer with a death certificate reference. Some require a copy mailed or faxed.
Check if both names are on accounts
If both spouses are named on the utility account, no action is typically needed. The surviving account holder simply continues the service.
Keep all utilities running during estate settlement
Even if the home will be sold, keep utilities on. Empty homes with no heat develop problems. Realtors need lights and climate control for showings. Insurance may require active utilities.
Document Now Checklist
- List all utility providers with account numbers
- Which name(s) are on each account
- Whether auto-pay is set up (and from which bank account)
- Monthly cost of each utility
