Storage facilities file lien notices and auction contents when payments lapse. State lien laws vary, but most allow auctions after 30-90 days of nonpayment. Transfer autopay to the estate account immediately.

Obtain access with death certificate + letters testamentary
The facility will require a certified death certificate and letters testamentary (or letters of administration) from the probate court before granting access to the unit. Some facilities also require a court order. Call the facility manager first to confirm their specific requirements.
Locate gate code and key before visiting
Having the documented gate access code, unit number, and key or lock combination saves weeks of back-and-forth with the facility. Check the vault, the deceased's phone notes, email, and keychain.
Inventory and photograph contents before removing anything
Before removing any items, photograph the entire unit from multiple angles and create a written inventory. This documentation is essential for estate valuation, insurance claims, and equitable distribution among heirs.
Downgrade or consolidate before canceling
If settlement will take months, consider downsizing to a smaller unit to reduce costs rather than rushing to empty it. Only cancel after all contents have been removed, inventoried, and distributed.
