Assess the book of business value
Before surrendering anything, consult with an insurance business broker. A book of business (renewal commissions) can be worth 1-3x annual revenue and may be the most valuable asset in the estate.
Notify appointing carriers
Contact each insurance carrier where the producer held appointments. Discuss options for transferring the book of business vs. having policies reassigned by the carrier.
Notify the state insurance department
Contact the state department of insurance to report the death and begin the license surrender process. If licensed in multiple states, notify each state.
Notify policyholders
Send written notice to policyholders advising them of the transition. Provide new agent contact information if the book is being transferred or sold.
Negotiate book of business sale
Work with a qualified insurance business broker to sell the book of business if appropriate. This preserves value for the estate and continuity for clients.
