Step-by-Step Guide
Notify the FCC
File a notification with the FCC to cancel the license. For amateur (ham) radio operators, the call sign will be placed back in the available pool after 2 years unless a family member requests it.
Cancel ULS registration
Access the FCC's Universal Licensing System (ULS) to cancel the registration. A family member or estate representative can submit the cancellation.
Address any commercial licenses
If the individual held commercial FCC licenses (broadcast, GMRS, etc.), these may have transfer or assignment provisions. Consult the specific license terms.
