Step-by-Step Guide

1

Notify the Pension Service

If Tell Us Once was used, the Pension Service is already notified. Otherwise, call the Pension Service at 0800 731 0469 to report the death and stop payments.

2

Check survivor's inherited State Pension

The surviving spouse may be entitled to inherit a portion of the deceased's additional State Pension. Under the old system, up to 50% may transfer. Check eligibility based on when each spouse reached State Pension age.

3

Apply for Bereavement Support Payment

If the deceased paid National Insurance contributions, the surviving spouse or civil partner may claim Bereavement Support Payment: a lump sum plus monthly payments for up to 18 months.

4

Return overpayments

Any State Pension payments received after the date of death must be returned. The Pension Service will calculate and notify of any overpayment.
