Step-by-Step Guide
Apply for the CPP Death Benefit
Submit Form ISP1200 to claim the $2,500 CPP Death Benefit. The estate, surviving spouse, or next of kin may apply. Apply within 60 days to avoid delays.
Apply for CPP Survivor Pension
The surviving spouse or common-law partner may be eligible for an ongoing CPP survivor's pension. Submit Form ISP1300 with the death certificate and marriage/common-law proof.
Cancel SIN and other benefits
Notify Service Canada to cancel the Social Insurance Number (SIN). Cancel Employment Insurance, Old Age Security, and any other federal benefits.
Return benefit payments received after death
Any EI, OAS, or CPP payments received after the date of death must be returned. Contact Service Canada to arrange repayment.
