Step-by-Step Guide
Report the death to IMSS
Notify the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) of the death. Bring the death certificate (acta de defunción), the deceased's NSS (Número de Seguridad Social), and beneficiary identification.
Apply for pensión de viudez
The surviving spouse is entitled to a pensión de viudez (widow/widower pension) equal to 40% of the deceased's base pension. Apply at the IMSS sub-delegación with marriage certificate and death certificate.
Apply for orphan's pension if applicable
Children under 16 (or 25 if studying) may receive a pensión de orfandad equal to 20% of the base pension per child. Submit birth certificates and school enrollment proof.
Cancel healthcare coverage
The deceased's IMSS healthcare coverage will be cancelled. Dependants may retain coverage for a limited period. Check eligibility for continued benefits.
