Notify the ATO of the death
Call the ATO deceased estate line on 13 28 61. Provide the Tax File Number (TFN) and death certificate. The ATO will update their records and issue a new TFN for the estate.
File the final individual tax return
Lodge the deceased's final tax return covering income from 1 July to the date of death. A registered tax agent can lodge on behalf of the estate.
Lodge estate tax returns if required
If the estate earns income after death (interest, rent, dividends), a separate trust tax return must be filed for the estate using the estate TFN.
