Contact the employer (Gusto admin)
Gusto accounts are managed by the employer. Contact the company owner or HR admin to report the death. They will process the off-boarding in Gusto, which handles final paycheck, benefits termination, and tax document generation.

Request final paycheck and PTO payout
Ask the employer to run the final paycheck through Gusto, including any unused PTO or vacation time owed. Gusto will calculate withholdings and generate the payment. Confirm the payment method (direct deposit or check).

Review Gusto-administered benefits
If the employer offered health insurance, 401(k), or other benefits through Gusto, ask about the status of each. Gusto partners with third-party providers for retirement and insurance — get the specific provider names and contact info.
Download pay stubs and tax documents
If you have access to the deceased's Gusto employee portal, download all available pay stubs, W-2s, and tax documents. If not, ask the employer to provide copies. These are critical for filing the final tax return.
