Step-by-Step Guide

1

Search MissingMoney.com (national database)

Search missingmoney.com using the deceased\'s full legal name. This is the official NAUPA multi-state search tool. It is completely free.

2

Search Unclaimed.org for additional states

Some states do not participate in MissingMoney. Visit unclaimed.org to find direct links to every state\'s unclaimed property database.

3

Search every state the deceased lived in

Unclaimed property is held by the state of the owner\'s last known address. Search every state where the deceased lived, worked, or had accounts — including states from decades ago.

4

Search alternate names and maiden names

Search using maiden names, married names, nicknames, middle names, and common misspellings. Property is often held under old or alternate name variations.

5

File claims as estate representative

When you find unclaimed property, file a claim as the executor or administrator. You will need death certificate, letters testamentary, and proof of identity. Never pay a third-party "finder" — claims are always free.
