Step-by-Step Guide
Understand what Login.gov provides access to
Login.gov is the federal government\'s single sign-on identity system. It provides access to Social Security (SSA), Veterans Affairs (VA), IRS, USAJOBS, and other federal services. Access may be needed to manage benefits.
Do NOT attempt to log in as the deceased
Using someone else\'s Login.gov account is a federal offense. Instead, contact each federal agency directly as the estate representative.
Warning: Do not log into the deceased person\'s federal identity account
Contact SSA, VA, and IRS directly for estate matters
Report the death to Social Security (1-800-772-1213), VA (1-800-827-1000), and IRS as needed. Each agency has its own estate/survivor process separate from Login.gov.
