Estimated time: Immediately
Submit required documentation
Empower will require a certified death certificate and identification for the claimant. If you are the named beneficiary, provide your ID. If claiming on behalf of the estate, provide Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
Estimated time: 1-2 weeks
Review account details and distribution options
Once the claim is validated, review the account balance, investment allocations, and any outstanding loans. Discuss distribution options: inherited IRA rollover, lump sum, or installment payments. Consult a tax advisor on the best approach.
Process the distribution
Complete the distribution election form and submit it to Empower. Processing typically takes 5-10 business days after all documents are received. You will receive a 1099-R for the distribution for tax purposes.
